When a team member gets 20 or more people in their team, they have a tendency to get into a motivational or management mode. The excuse for doing this is to “help” their team members. This often is no more than giving advice on how to do the business – some advice of which may be faulty industry practice which could do harm than good to your organisation. If the leader does not have much experience or do not sponsor or recruit  builders and  customers in sufficient numbers, the team’s activity and morale will start to decline.

So what are the consequences of going into a motivational or management mode?

THIS IS A COPYCAT BUSINESS

If your team members see that you are not actively sponsoring or recruiting, they will also take the easy way out and do the same as that it is far easier to be a “motivator” or “team manager” than to be a recruiter or sponsor.

TEAM ACTIVITY DECLINES

Sponsoring and getting new customers is the life blood of the network marketing business. When distributors do not build a big enough team, they do not earn enough money and this usually leads to people quitting.

HARDER TO RECRUIT IF THE TEAM LACKS THE ABILITY TO BRING IN NEW TALENT

No one wants to join a team that is not growing. They want to join a team that has new talent flowing through their ranks and new people being promoted.  Where’s the motivation when the team seems like an old boys’ club of tired old faces. Smart people will begin to wonder if they had joined the right team if their members do not seem to be able to sponsor new people. They may even begin to have doubts if they have joined the right company or whether the products are saleable.  Nothing is more de-motivating than seeing an inactive leader.

PASSIVE VS ACTIVE MODE

Network Marketing is a volunteer business. If you are not in the trenches actively bringing in new people, your volunteer army won’t be on the front lines in battle with you. Train them right, and give them the skills they need for success and you stand a better chance of succeeding. Success in MLM or Network Marketing requires sustained recruitment and personal product volume..

BEING YOUR OWN BOSS

People join this wonderful business to be their own boss. Sure they want to know how to do the business. But they don’t want to be told to recruit if the leader does not lead by example. Micro-managing people is counter-intuitive.

THE NUMBERS GAME

We are in a business where personal sponsoring is key to our success. It’s a Numbers Game. The more people you see, the luckier / richer you get. What’s the point of opening a shop if you have only a few customers or have short working hours?  Building your clientèle list is key to your business survival. Get into massive action mode instead. Call more people, see more people.

NOT SPENDING MORE TIME ON MONEY PRODUCING ACTIVITIES

If you do not spend your productive time on money producing activities, you can’t get a good return on your business.  Earning a low income is not what you’ve signed up for when you decided to join a network marketing business. It far better to follow up on inactive customers or to look for new customers. If you don’t have a high volume of personal sales, it is difficult for you to get your team to generate higher sales. If you want a stronger bottom line, everyone has to be generating higher sales volume.

AVOIDING REJECTIONS

Many leaders go to into management mode because they cannot handle the rejections and the high failure rate. If this is the problem, then you must learn how to improve on your prospecting and presentation skills and closing strategies. Keep working on these key skills until it becomes a daily part of your fun activities. If you have problems sponsoring from your existing network, it is time to join other social or professional networks to gain access to new prospects.

ABANDONING WELL TESTED METHODS FOR UNTEST ONES.

Many leaders have the urge to get into management mode because they think they have found an “fool proof” technique / system which can accelerate their team’s growth. However, this technique / system has not been tested in their current team  / business environment. This usually lead to disillusionment when some team members find that this new system is working for them or worse still, they go and try out some other untested methods.. By all means try new methods which are a natural / incremental progression of your existing success methods that the team have been using all along. But stay within the familiar environment that they are used to. People want a simple system to run on – forever, if possible. Any new method may cause some of your frail members to lose confidence in themselves and cause them to even lose faith in your existing system which are yielding some promising results so far.

RELYING TOO MUCH ON ON-LINE MARKETING

One of the greatest disservice you can do your team is to tell them that they can recruit most of their people online. This market segment is mostly populated with people who are interested in get rich quick schemes, money games etc.. I’ve seen many friends who get involved in such scams and continually jump from one such company to another until they have burnt out all their cash and friends.  People who get involved in such schemes usually don’t have integrity as the people who join them will usually end up losers. Most online opportunities basically sell management mode vehicles for people who don’t want to live in the real world. You cannot create a real business if you don’t selling real products, solve real problems and have a repeatable business. Anyone who tells you that such business concepts are outdated do not have a good, viable business model that you can rely on. These marketing models are usually short lived and die off as soon as the hype has worn out and / or the company closes down (usually in one or two years or even less). Picking up the phone or going outside to meet people and solving their problems is still the best way of generating new business.

BREAKING YOUR TEAM AWAY FROM THE MAIN TEAM

Unless there are good reasons for doing so, you should not break away into smaller teams. Creative energies, social recognition and group endorsements work best on a bigger stage environment. There is strength in numbers. The bigger the meeting, the greater is the success rate. The more people in the room, the greater the excitement and synergy your team will have. The greater the number of success stories / recognition shared within the team, the more motivated members will be. Action speaks louder than the words of any leader. Don’t let ego lead you to operate in a less than optimal environment.

 

Here is what I recommend if you intend to go into Motivational or Management Mode:

  • If your team has less than 100 people spend no more than 10% of your time in management mode
  • If your team has less than 500 people spend no more than 20% of your time in management mode
  • If your team has less than 1,000 people spend no more than 30% of your time in management mode
  • If your team has less than 5,000 people spend no more than 40% of your time in management mode.

As your team grows, you will spend more and more time in management mode, HOWEVER, you should never spend a MAJORITY of your time in management mode. And you should NEVER totally leave the trenches yourself.

Even when you are in management mode, you’ll have to identify your key players and make sure you are NOT working with people who are a waste of time. These usually mean people who may be active but who lack focus and commitment. Use the time working on your own direct marketing and recruitment activities instead.

To be successful in network marketing, you must first work on yourself. Your success is free advertisement which will attract new people to your team and serve as a vehicle to help them to work towards higher goals and achievements.

Stay focused and be positive. The more you learn, the more you earn. Network marketing is one big self-development course.

WHAT IS NETWORK MARKETING | MLM?

WHAT IS MLM OR NETWORK MARKETING ?

MLM aka Multi Level Marketing or Network Marketing is a low capital start up business. They are also called Affiliate Marketing, Direct Sales etc depending on the structure of the compensation plan.

HOW DOES MLM OR NETWORK MARKETING WORK?

Network Marketing is basically the buying products from your own store (company) instead of buying it from the supermarket, doctor, pharmacy or other companies etc. When you get other people to do the same, the company pays you a sales commission every time the people you have signed up buys the product you recommended.

You need not carry any stocks, have sales staff or office. You just recommend people to the company and the company will pay you the sales commission The company will also deliver the products to your customer(s).

If the customer recommends the product to another friend, you will be paid a Referral Fee and Commission also. For my company, this goes on indefinitely until your weekly commissions reach US$13,500 A WEEK (for my company). Once you have reached this stage, you would become a Professional Network Marketer and are ready to go to the next level (provided you meet the qualifications of being an Executive) where your income can be unlimited depending on your business skills, team growth and activity.

That in a nutshell is MLM. You are paid on your efforts and the efforts of others who do the same under the two lines / teams / legs started by you – all the way down the line. It is possible that you may be earning from the efforts of people you have never met as these are brought in by your friends of friends of friends etc etc. These people are called your “downlines / team / organisations / associates“.

EXAMPLE OF HOW MLM / NETWORK MARKETING WORKS

You plant a single lily pad in the pond on day one.
1. Lily pads double every day
2. On day 30th, the pond is 100% full of lily pads.
3. How full is the pond on the 29th day???

When you understand this idea, you’ll understand the Power of Network Marketing

HOW TO EVALUATE A NETWORK MARKETING COMPANY?

  1. Ask how the company got started and who started it. Is the dreamer who started it still involved? Has the company been sold to investors?
  2. Ask if the company is solvent (capable of meeting financial obligations).
  3. Ask if the company is growing (more sales than last year).
  4. Does the company listen to and implement suggestions from leaders? Most good companies have a “Field Distributor Advisory Board” that are rotated and elected every year and meet quarterly or semi-annually.
  5. If the company is over 10 years old, does it reinvent itself by opening in new countries and creating new products? A “single” product company will find itself running out of customers after a given period of time, just like any company does.

A QUALITY PRODUCT OR SERVICE
A legitimate network marketing program has to have a product or a service that people are looking for and willing to buy. This allows distributors to grow and strengthen the networking program.

If a network marketing opportunity only sells a dream of getting rich without a tangible project or service to promote, then it’s most likely a scam. Avoid any program that offers commissions solely on recruiting more people. Legitimate programs still pay for recruits, but that should always tie into selling a product or service.

MINIMAL INITIAL INVESTMENT
Legitimate network marketing programs usually require the purchase of a sales kit (at a minimum) so you have tools needed to reach out to others and sell. They don’t ask for outrageous payments upfront, for whatever reason, be it fulfilling a initial requirement for inventory or undisclosed deposits. If you find that a network marketing company demands a tremendous investment before you can join, be very wary — the chances of them running with your money are much higher.

SUPPORT THROUGH TOOLS AND TRAINING
Like any other real business, legitimate network marketing companies want their independent distributors to do the best job they can. That’s why you should ask if the program you’re planning to join will provide tools you’ll need to start selling and recruiting. The type of tools that may be offered include tracking systems for your sales, commissions, and product deliveries. Also, a legitimate MLM program should prepare and hone your skills with training sessions led by the veterans and industry pioneers.

NO OUTLANDISH PROMISES
The moment you’re told that you will get rich quick with little to no effort, or that you’ll be a millionaire within months that’s when you should look elsewhere. If it sounds too good to be true, then that is probably the case. A legitimate MLM program will require you to put in the work (i.e., reaching out to people, marketing products, attending training sessions, utilizing tools properly).

NANCY LONG – MY DIRECT SALES CAREER

EMPLOYEE:

Nancy Long started work when she 18 years old as white collar admin job and after 12 years, her childhood dream of becoming very rich was fast fading away.

Fortunately she was introduced to two seminal self-help books which completely changed her life:-

  • Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill
  • “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.

Following the recommendations of the Hill & Carnegie, Nancy went in search of direct sales and MLM careers. She joined the Life Insurance Industry instead as MLM was prohibited in Singapore at that time.

INSURANCE CAREER:

At that time, the life insurance career as shunned by most people as it was considered bad luck to sell so-called “death products”. But she knew that it was a good time to get into this industry / career as only a small percentage of the population was insured and it was an industry where some people were earning a million dollars a year irregardless of their backgroud – educational or otherwise.

Thanks to these 2 books, Nancy achieved a great success in selling life insurance even though she had no prior sales experience. It was through sheer hard work and perserverence she became a member of the prestigious international Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) award in her first year and later a lifetime MDRT member.

Because she made it a priority to start fast and meet new people everyday, she was able to break records in her new career::

  • Top Agent in her first year in the business (for 3 consecutive years in No. of sales)
  • Top New Supervisor two years later (for 3 consecutive years)
  • Top New Manager three years later
  • Court of the Table
  • Top 3 District Manager five years later (for more than 10 years in South Asia)
  • Life Member of the prestigeous Million Dolllar Round Table (MDRT)

Thereafter, she was consistently in the top five in AIA Singapore in terms of personal sales and agency revenues region-wide (which meant she had to compete with top producers from Hong Kong, Malaysia,  Hong Kong, Thailand etc).

She also always qualified for the prestigious “Top of the Table” and “President’s Club” throughout her career in AIA.

Needless to say she was AIA’s crème de la crème for 20 years, one of the Company’s Top Producer in Personal and Group Sales and was heading the biggest multi million dollar agency in her company.

In 2000, she was awarded the Company’s very Top Award “Senior District Manager” (The First and Only lady to receive the award at that time) and as such, Nancy Long became an industry icon. To receive this distinguished title, Nancy had to have an  impeccable record for 20 consecutive years in terms of high sales and group performance, qualified for all the annual recognition contests as well good customer care service record. When she received this rare and distinguished rank / recognition, there were a total of only 6 Senior District Managers in the 50 year history of AIA Singapore..

She was also a much sought after trainer and public speaker in the region because of her extensive knowledge in direct sales particularly in regard to insurance sales and agency management. She was also a very entertaining motivational speaker because she was an avid reader of self-help books and attended countless seminars,courses of most of the well known gurus in the self-help field etc. on interpersonal skills as well as how to be successful in direct sales

When the Good and Services Tax (GST) was implemented in Singapore in 1994, she automatically became a “GST person” , This meant that over and above paying personal income tax, she also had to pay GST on her income. A GST person or company is someone who has a turnover of S$1 million a year or more and pays GST on their total sales turnover.

When she was the top in everything in the insurance industry, Ms Long shocked everyone in the industry by leaving the Insurance industry for the new and untested MLM / Network Marketing industry which had just been legalized in Singapore in 2001.

NETWORK MARKETING 1.0 CAREER:

Everyone said that she was crazy to walk away from a steady million dollar a year income (she was receiving a large regular residual income from her insurance business excluding new sales) but the wellness, health, fitness and nutrition industry was her passion and an industry she always wanted to be part of because of its unlimited income potential via residual and leverage income. .

Moreover, she knew from Paul Zane Pilzer, that the network marketing / MLM business was going to be the next trillion dollar business in the world because the baby boomers wanted to be more healthy, stay active, live longer and do their own business from home.

Within 3 months, she achieved the Top Rank in her company as Unicity Presidential Club Member. She stayed with the same company for more than 10 years. She was the Top Singapore Leader in this company for many years and her organisation in this company was the biggest in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia with a turnover of more than half a million a month. She went into retirement for 2 years but found her retirement life without purpose very stifling and unhealthy.

She realised that her former network marketing company Unicity could no longer give her the high growth she was getting from her insurance business, and so she began on a journey of finding a company that coould give her higher growth prospects for unlimited growth.

NETWORK MARKETING 2.0 CAREER:

In 2013, Nancy found Isagenix and very quickly achieved Crystal Executive status. She was consistently among the top performers in Asia and in 2016 became the company’s Top Earner in Asia.

Plus with the company’s system she has shed away the 12 kilos of fats – something she could not do for the past 30 years even though she took countless brands of slimming products including her former company’s slim products. Whenever she took these products, she would lose 3-4 kg of fats but quickly put on the fats on again. These yo-yo diets were not doing her health any good. Also she was looking for a company that had organic products, that were free from GMOs (genetically modified organisms), soy, artificial sweeteners, colourings, flavours, preservatives etc.
