Below is the list of foods defined by their Acidic or Alkaline Properties which can make the body acidic or alkaline.  Alkaline foods helps to keep your body in optimal health and disease-free according to recent studies whereas people with high acidic levels are usually of poor health.

The pH scale is from 0 to 14, with numbers below 7 acidic and numbers above 7 alkaline. This chart is intended only as a general guide to alkalizing and acidifying foods.

This list of Alkaline and Acidic Foods are not exhaustive but it is a good starting point for those serious about embarking on the road to good health – the natural and traditional way – which have been proven through generations of experience:

Strongly acidic food:

pH 5.0 to 5.5 5.0 artificial sweeteners, beef, carbonated soft drinks & fizzy drinks, cigarettes (tailor made), drugs, flour (white wheat), goat, lamb, pastries & cakes from white flour, pork, sugar (white), beer, brown sugar, chicken, deer, chocolate, coffee, custard with white sugar, jams, jellies, liquor, pasta (white), rabbit, semolina, table salt refined & iodized, tea black, turkey, wheat bread, white rice, white vinegar (processed).

Acid producing activities/emotions: overwork, anger, fear, jealousy & stress

Mildly acidic food:

pH 6.0 to 6.5 6.0 cigarette tobacco (roll your own), cream of wheat (unrefined), fish, fruit juices with sugar, maple syrup (processed), molasses (sulphured), pickles (commercial), breads (refined) of corn, oats, rice & rye, cereals (refined), shellfish, wheat germ, whole wheat foods, wine, yogurt (sweetened) 6.5 bananas (green), buckwheat, cheeses (sharp), corn & rice breads, egg whole (cooked hard), ketchup, mayonnaise, oats, pasta (whole grain), peanuts, potatoes (with no skins), popcorn (air-popped not microwave- with salt & butter), rice (basmati), rice (brown), soy sauce (commercial), tapioca, wheat bread (sprouted organic).

Weakly acidic to neutral food:

pH 7.0 7.0 barley malt syrup, barley, bran, cashews, cereals (unrefined with honey-fruit-maple syrup), cornmeal, cranberries, fructose, honey (pasteurized), lentils, macadamias, maple syrup (unprocessed), milk and most dairy products, molasses (unsulphured organic, nutmeg, mustard, pistachios, popcorn & butter (plain), rice or wheat crackers (unrefined), rye (grain), rye bread (organic sprouted), seeds(pumpkin & sunflower), walnuts, blueberries, brazil nuts, butter (salted), cheeses (mild & crumbly), crackers (unrefined rye), dried beans (mung, adzuki, pinto, kidney, garbanzo), dry coconut, egg whites, goats milk, olives (pickled), pecans, plums, prunes, spelt.

Weakly alkaline to neutral food:

pH 7.0 7.0 almonds, artichokes (jerusalem), barley-malt (sweetener-bronner), brown rice syrup, brussel sprouts, cherries, coconut (fresh), cucumbers, egg plant, honey (raw), leeks, miso, mushrooms, okra, olives ripe, onions, pickles, (home made), radish, sea salt, spices, taro, tomatoes (sweet), vinegar (sweet brown rice), water chestnut amaranth, artichoke (globe), chestnuts (dry roasted), egg yolks (soft cooked), essene bread, goat’s milk and whey (raw), horseradish, mayonnaise (home made), millet, olive oil (not cooked and extra virgin), quinoa, rhubarb, sesame seeds (whole) sprouted grains, tempeh (only fermented soy products), tomatoes (less sweet).

Alkalizing spices & seasonings incolude chili pepper – cinnamon – curry – ginger – herbs (all) – miso – mustard – Himalayan rock crystal salt – tamari

Alkalizing Other- alkaline antioxidant water, bee pollen, fresh fruit juice, green/veggie juices, lecithin granules, mineral water molasses, blackstrap, probiotic cultures, soured dairy products

Alkalizing Minerals– calcium: pH 12 – cesium: pH 14 – magnesium: pH 9 – potassium: pH 14 – sodium: pH 14

Alkaline producing activities/emotions: meditation, prayer, peace, happiness, kindness, love neutral pH 7.0 – healthy body saliva pH range is between 6.4 to 6.8 (on your pH test strips) butter (fresh unsalted), cream (fresh & raw), margarine, milk (raw cow’s), whey (cow’s), yogurt (plain).

Mildly alkaline food:

pH 7.5 to 8.0 8.0 apples (sweet), apricots, alfalfa sprouts 9, arrowroot, flour , avocados, bananas (ripe), berries, carrots, celery, currants, dates & figs (fresh), garlic, gooseberry, grapes (less sweet), grapefruit, guavas, herbs (leafy green), lettuce (leafy green), nectarine, peaches (sweet), pears (less sweet), peas (fresh sweet), persimmon, pumpkin (sweet), sea salt (vegetable) , spinach 7.5 apples (sour), bamboo shoots, beans (fresh green), beets, bell pepper, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carob, daikon, ginger (fresh), grapes (sour), kale, kohlrabi, lettuce (pale green), oranges, parsnip, peaches (less sweet), peas (less sweet), potatoes & skin, pumpkin (less sweet), raspberry, sapote, strawberry, squash, sweet corn (fresh), tamari, turnip, vinegar (apple cider).

Strongly alkaline food:

pH 8.5 to 9.0 9.0 lemons , watermelon 8.5 agar agar , cantaloupe, cayenne (capsicum) , dried dates & figs, kelp, karengo, kudzu root, limes, mango, melons, papaya, parsley, seedless grapes (sweet), watercress, seaweeds, asparagus, endive, kiwi fruit, fresh unsweetened fruit juices, grapes (sweet), passion fruit, pears (sweet), pineapple, raisins, umeboshi plum, fresh vegetable juices.


There are several versions of the Acidic and Alkaline Food chart to be found in different books and on the Internet. The following foods are sometimes attributed to the Acidic side of the chart and sometimes to the alkaline side. Remember, you don’t need to adhere strictly to the alkaline side of the chart. Just be sure a good percentage of the foods you eat come from that side.

Asparagus, brazil nuts, brussel sprouts, buckwheat, chicken, corn, cottage cheese, eggs, flax seeds green tea, herbal tea, honey, kombucha, lima beans, maple syrup, milk, nuts, organic milk (unpasteurized), potatoes, white, pumpkin seeds, sauerkraut, soy products, sprouted seeds, squashes, sunflower seeds, yogurt are better choices.

Alkaline Foods | How It Affects Your Health

Case Study of someone who used Alkaline Foods to fight Cancer tumors:

More that 30 years ago, a Mr Zhang who worked in the retail sales department of a Taipei Brewery, was selected to take an overseas course in brewery.

One of the pre-conditions for the overseas study was for him to go to a public hospital for a medical checkup. The subsequent health checkup showed that he had a cancerous tumor growth in his lung – about the size of a child’s fist.  His overseas study grant was therefore canceled.

The greatly disappointed Mr Zhang felt that the medical diagnosis was wrong. So he went to another hospital for a medical check-up. The second medical checkup also confirmed that he had a cancerous tumor in his lung.

For someone who was so young and healthy to be stricken with such terminal illness, it was a great shock.  In his despair, he rang his old class mate, Mr Wei, who at that time was with the Taidong County Government, for advice.  He suggested that Mr Zhang go and see Dr Lu  Geling, who specializes in cancer clinical research, for treatment.

When Dr Lu met with Mr Zhang, Dr Lu said: “Let me ask you: do you know why is cancer referred to as terminal illness?”  Both Mr Zhang and Mr Wei did not know how to answer.

Dr Lu explained: “There are only two approaches taken by patients to treat cancer currently. The first is to destroy the source of the disease. The second is the increase the body’s capability to fight the disease.

But the strange thing is that, irrespective of whether we use Cobalt 60 or any other drug to destroy the cancer cells, before the cancer cells are killed, the good cells are destroyed first.

On the other hand, no matter what nutrients or supplements we use, before the good cells have a chance to absorb them, the cancer cells have absorbed them and it simply speeds up the growth of the cancerous cells.  Therefore both approaches are doomed to failure, that is why cancer is terminal.”

Dr Lu continued: “People are smart enough to solve most problems they encounter.  However, when it comes to cancer treatment, people make decisions based on fear.  That is why they do not try to seek a third option when they know the first two options have a low chance of long term success.  During my clinical research, I discovered from blood tests that of 100% of the cancer patients’ blood samples was acidic”.

“In contrast, Buddhist monks and nuns who have been vegetarians all their lives and who live very close to Nature had blood that was prevalently weakly alkaline.  This could account as to why cancer was rare among them.  Therefore, I concluded that a weakly alkaline condition was not conducive to the aggressive cancer cell growth.

Mr Zhang, I would suggest that you immediately:

  1. reduce your intake of the acidic meaty dishes.
  2. Take more of the alkaline food. In addition you can take green algae and soup made from water chestnuts with shell,
  3. Modify your physical condition, and try seriously to have a regular life style which is close to Nature;

If you are still alive for five years time, you would have won your fight against cancer. I wish you the best of luck.”

Mr Zhang followed Dr Lu’s suggestions and seriously altered his eating habits.

Every day, he ate green algae, drank chestnut soup, be optimistic and doing appropriate amount of exercise, and went back to the same public hospital for regular check ups. The regular checkups showed that the tumor was gradually shrinking – much to the surprise of the doctors as Mr Zhang did not go for any cancer drug / chemotherapy treatment.

The Result of Alkaline Treatment on cancerous tumors

Five years later, the tumor size shrunk to such a state as to be almost disappeared.  40 years later, Mr Zhang’s continues to enjoy good health.

In another case, Mr Chen Tianshou, was similarly diagnosed with lung cancer. He too followed Dr Lu’s natural remedies for cancer so he could be cancer-free. The outcome was that he too was able to recover fully from the cancer, just like Mr Zhang.

Here are some the findings about alkaline vs. acidic blood

The Blood of healthy persons are weakly alkaline, with a pH of about 7.35 to 7.45

  • Babies’ blood is also weakly acidic
  • As adults mature their blood becomes more acidic in nature.

According to a study of 600 cancer patients, 85% of the patients’ body fluids are acidic.  Therefore, the first step is to reduce the acidity in the body through alkaline foods.

Acidic physical conditions in the body are manifested in the following ways:

  • Skin is lackluster
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Feeling tired even with very little exercise, and feeling sleepy the moment one gets on to public buses
  • Easily out of breath going up and down the stairs
  • Big waist line
  • Feeling lethargic and have difficulty moving around briskly

Why does the body physical condition turn acidic?

1. Excessive intake of dairy acidic food. Meat, dairy products, eggs, beef, ham, etc are acidic food

  • taking too much acidic foods can cause the blood becoming acidic and viscous, resulting in poor blood circulation. This could lead to cold feet or knee, stiff shoulders and insomnia.
  • When one is young and strong, taking appropriate serving portions of meat is ok.  However, we get older, our diet should be primarily vegetables and fish.

2. Physical stress and the lack of sleep can cause the body to become acidic. Irregular pace in life will lead to mental and physical stress.

  • According to statistics, people who sleep late are 5 times more likely to get cancer than normal people.
  • Irregular sleeping hours can affect health.
  • Human organs are controlled by the autonomic nervous systemsympathetic nerves function when you need to be active (i.e. daytime), and parasympathetic nerves are utilized when your body is at rest (i.e. nighttime).  If the nerves are subjected to abuse by way of irregular sleep / wake cycles, the body immunity is weaken and diseases can occur.

3. Emotional Stress

  • Hectic lifestyle can bring about stress
  • Demanding jobs can also lead to mental stresses
  • Age, Unhealthy Lifestyles, Drugs and Stress can lead to imperfect adrenal cortex function syndrome which can cause death.

4. Physical Stress

  • Before any operation, it would be necessary to check if the adrenal cortex is functioning normally. If the adrenal cortex is functioning properly, or if the adrenal cortex to cope with the stress of the operation, it could lead to death or other undesirable health consequences.
  • If the patient’s face is visibly puffy, it would be necessary to check the patient’s medical history and medication status. For patients taking adrenal cortical hormone, extra care should be exercised when administering acupuncture.
  • Stress due to hard physical labor, excessive exercise, staying up late, long distance driving etc should be avoided as much as possible.
